The links above provide us with view of an existence a 'world away' from our reality. Thank you to the e-space, we are touched to the core and made more aware of the plight of others less fortunate. We are made aware of the challenges displaced people face when fleeing their homes, family members and the life they once knew.

Virtual reality had a much deeper effect on me as the viewer.

Before viewing, my first thoughts regarding the needs of refugees in these challenging settings around the globe, focused on the provision of the basic human needs of clean water, food, shelter, hygiene and clothing. Just as important as their physical needs, I believe is the impact of their trauma on their psychological, social and emotional needs.

What about their educational needs? What is important now, and what is not so important, especially in terms of the learning spaces I have been studying so far?

Suddenly finding themselves in an intangible liminal space, a place of unknown, uncertainty, grief and loss, far removed from what they've known before, the highest priority for refugees is their personal space. They need protection, safety and support in the situation they now find themselves in. The group space becomes important to provide a sense of community. Children will need a safe place to play and to learn. Access to support services, skills and knowledge will be important for adults, assisting them to support their children and giving them a renewed sense of purpose and hope for future employment opportunities. Physical spaces enable these actions and access to the e-space will maintain links with life beyond the boundaries.

Helping people to help themselves will be a focus......

Education brings normalcy.

Education is community.

Education is purpose.

Education brings hope.

Education brings empowerment.
