Family Peace......

I had the opportunity to hear one of Australia's highest profile psychologists and a specialist in parenting and child psychology, Michael Carr-Gregg, speak at an information night for parents at our son's school one evening, several years ago now.

It was a most memorable evening, providing a wealth of reassurance, advice and strategies for us as we were all embarking on our journey through what my husband and I have termed the 'teenage tunnel' of adolescence with our beloved offspring.

On my way to work one morning this week, I recognised the voice of Dr Carr-Gregg promoting a foundation for Family Peace. His mention of how a parent's consumption of alcohol may influence the communication and mood in the home caught my attention. As a child, having witnessed the negative effects of alcohol on several occasions, this tugged at my heart strings.

I'd like to see schools take a stand here and show our students that in our contemporary society, we do not always need alcohol to be an integral part of a social function. Personally I'd like them to take the same position they do with smoking, and prohibit any parent alcohol consumption at any school function students are attending.

Please.... for the sake of our children..... show them we can participate in a fund-raising carnival, a family twilight BBQ, a Performing Arts evening or a Christmas break-up function without needing an alcoholic drink.

"Changes begin at home with somewhat small but effectively powerful strategies. Little actions can have a huge impact.........Family Peace: do it for your kids".
